Federal Way Police Fatally Shoot Man Outside Commons Mall
Multiple 911 callers reported a man pointing a gun at shoppers before officers shot him, and no officers or bystanders were hurt, police said.
Federal Way Police shot and killed an armed man outside The Commons mall on Thursday after he reportedly pointed a weapon at officers during an encounter.
Multiple 911 calls reported a man pointing a gun at people in the parking lot around 6:40 p.m., prompting Federal Way Police to respond to the shopping center along Pacific Highway South and South 320th Street.
When officers arrived and attempted contact, the man 'pointed a weapon' at them, police said. Officers discharged their weapons; medical personnel provided aid, but the man died at the scene.
No officers or bystanders were injured during the encounter. The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave while The Valley Independent Investigative Team reviews the shooting.
The Valley Independent Investigative Team will lead the investigation, as Federal Way Police are excluded from the process. The King County Medical Examiner has not yet released the man's identity or official cause of death.
