Gunman fired more than 180 shots at CDC headquarters, but no staff wounded, officials say
Patrick Joseph White fired nearly 200 rounds at CDC buildings, killing Officer David Rose and expressing vaccine-related grievances, authorities said. Over 500 shell casings were recovered.
- On Friday, Patrick Joseph White opened fire toward the CDC headquarters from a CVS Pharmacy across the street, firing over 180 shots and shattering about 150 windows.
- The GBI said White’s anger was driven by his belief that his COVID-19 vaccination worsened his back pain, and documents showed his discontent with the vaccines, investigators reported.
- According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, law enforcement recovered five firearms and over 500 shell casings; Hosey said, `'Evidence in this event indicates that the shooter had recently verbalized thoughts of suicide, which even led to law enforcement being contacted several weeks prior to the incident.'`
- Despite the shooting, no CDC employees were injured, and an online fundraising page for Rose’s family climbed to $380,000 by Tuesday afternoon.
- Amid ongoing concerns, federal, state and local agencies are reviewing security at the CDC campus, with CDC Office of Safety, Security and Asset Management Director Jeff Williams saying intense work is underway to ensure safety.
