2032 Olympic Stadium Work Begins in Brisbane After Protests
GIICA began early works after removing protesters, with officials saying the 63,000-seat Brisbane Stadium remains on schedule for the 2032 Games.
On Monday, the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority took control of Victoria Park from Brisbane City Council at midnight, with excavators immediately beginning exploratory work for the $3.6 billion Brisbane Olympics main stadium.
Queensland Premier David Crisafulli initiated the project to replace the Brisbane Cricket Ground, known as the Gabba, for the 2032 Games after making the 63,000-seat facility plans public in March 2025.
Following the removal of the Goori Camp Embassy early Monday, excavators rolled into the site after police and council staff dismantled protest camps and arrested five people last week.
Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt declined to issue heritage protection declarations for the site on Sunday, though he acknowledged the area's importance to the Turrbal and Yagara Peoples.
Once the stadium is completed, the government plans to unlock more of the 64-hectare park for public use, though Traditional Owner groups and community opponents vow to continue fighting the development.
