Met investigate donation to Jenrick's Tory leadership campaign
The probe centers on nearly £40,000 linked to Jenrick’s leadership campaign, after officials said about £37,500 may have come from a foreign source.
On January 6, 2026, the Metropolitan Police Service launched an investigation into donations linked to Robert Jenrick's 2024 Conservative Party leadership campaign following a referral from the Electoral Commission.
Investigators are examining allegations that £37,500 of a £100,000 donation from British entrepreneur Phillip Ullmann, routed through Spott Fitness, originated from businessman Gary Klopfenstein, potentially breaching UK electoral rules.
Reform Treasury spokesman Robert Jenrick dismissed the claims as an "untrue, politically motivated smear," asserting he never met Klopfenstein and his campaign complied with all electoral laws in 2024.
The Electoral Commission has paused its own inquiry pending the police investigation outcome, while Ullmann and Klopfenstein are reportedly in a separate legal dispute.
Jenrick, who ran to succeed Rishi Sunak as Conservative Party leader in 2024, has since defected to Nigel Farage's Reform party, where he serves as Treasury spokesman.
