Underground Transformer Explosion Sparks Fire on Bourbon Street, Police Say
NOPD said the transformer explosion triggered a roadway fire, and officials evacuated Bourbon Street and surrounding blocks as first responders secured the area.
On Saturday, an underground electrical transformer exploded near the intersection of Conti and Bourbon Streets in New Orleans, causing a fire in the roadway and prompting immediate police evacuation of surrounding blocks.
Authorities evacuated the 400 block of Bourbon Street and 700 block of Conti Street by 11:25 p.m. as New Orleans Fire Department and Entergy crews responded to the underground transformer failure.
The explosion caused power outages across several blocks, including parts of Canal Street, while NOPD public information officer Jonathan Morris confirmed no injuries had been reported by 11:35 p.m.
NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick and Mayor Helena Moreno scheduled a briefing for 12:20 a.m. as police maintained road closures on Bourbon and Bienville Streets to secure the scene.
The incident occurred amid elevated police presence for Fourth of July events and Essence Fest, with first responders continuing overnight operations to restore area safety.
