UK Police Forces to Use New Weapon to Stop Offenders in Illegal E-Scooter Crackdown
The invisible spray can mark riders and bikes from up to 10 metres away, giving officers a forensic link to incidents weeks later.
- Thames Valley Police is deploying SmartTag technology across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and Berkshire to combat rising criminal use of e-bikes and e-scooters.
- Developed by DeterTech, the handheld SmartTag device sprays an invisible forensic marker from up to 10 metres away, enabling investigators to link suspects to specific incidents via ultraviolet light detection.
- "SmartTag provides officers with an additional tactical option when responding to incidents involving vehicles being used in crime or in a manner that poses a risk to the public," a Hampshire police spokesperson said.
- Thames Valley Police has already seized more than 100 illegal machines in recent operations, warning that privately owned e-scooters on public roads risk fines, penalty points, and confiscation.
- Dorset Police and other forces have trialed similar marking methods to avoid dangerous pursuits, with North Wales Police Sergeant Iwan Hughes noting last year that traditional apprehension methods are often not viable.
