Boy, 14, Found Dead in River Thames in 11th Heatwave Water Tragedy
Thames Valley Police said the boy’s death was unexplained but not suspicious as officials warned hot weather can increase drowning risks.
On Wednesday, a 14-year-old boy died after getting into difficulty in the River Thames at Donnington Bridge, Oxford. Thames Valley Police described the death as "unexplained but not suspicious."
This fatality marks the 11th water-related death since the UK entered a record-breaking heatwave late last week, with nine victims young people. Temperatures in London reached 35.1C on Tuesday, the hottest May day on record.
Professor Mike Tipton, chair of the National Water Safety Forum, warned that drowning fatalities represent an "enormous problem" for people under 40. Cold water shock triggers involuntary gasping and hyperventilation, often a precursor to drowning.
The Royal Life Saving Society has called on schools to incorporate open water safety into the curriculum as a matter of urgency. The charity warned that water temperatures remain extremely cold despite rising air heat.
Forecasts from the Met Office indicate the hot weather will ease through the weekend as rain brings fresher conditions. A yellow heat health alert for London and the South East remains in effect until Saturday.
