Durham Police Identify Recruit Killed in Collision Near Aylmer

Durham Regional Police said the 27-year-old recruit had recently achieved his lifelong dream of becoming an officer.

  • On Tuesday, Durham Regional Police Service recruit Tyrone Magbitang died in a collision involving a sedan and transport truck near the Ontario Police College in Aylmer; a second constable in training remains in life-threatening condition.
  • The two recruits were traveling to a training session when the collision occurred shortly before 11:20 a.m. Magbitang, 27, had recently achieved his "lifelong dream" of working in law enforcement after joining the service as a special constable.
  • At the intersection of Imperial Road and College Line, Ontario Provincial Police investigators continue examining the crash site, where the transport truck driver remained uninjured. A witness who called 911 reported investigators remained until about 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
  • On Wednesday, Magbitang's body was transported from London to the Centre for Forensic Sciences in Toronto, accompanied by loved ones and service members as a "mark of respect." Flags at all regional facilities were lowered to half-mast honouring his service.
  • The Ontario Police College, training more than 8,000 personnel annually, remains a critical hub for police services across the province. Durham Police Chief Peter Moreira expressed "deep sadness" regarding the loss, describing Magbitang as a "compassionate, dedicated" individual.
