Police arrest man for allegedly setting wife ablaze

Police say Jacob Irewa admitted setting his wife ablaze after a domestic dispute, and the victim is receiving treatment as investigators prepare charges.

  • On Friday, the Kogi State Police Command arrested Jacob Irewa for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze at Oworo Estate in Lokoja. Operatives of the B Division Surveillance Team in Felele apprehended the suspect.
  • Preliminary findings indicate the disagreement began after Irawo allegedly burnt Irewa's clothes without permission. Police allege the suspect became enraged and used petrol from his motorcycle to set her on fire.
  • The victim survived the attack and is receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele. During preliminary investigation, the suspect admitted that he set his wife ablaze.
  • Police Public Relations Officer ASP Saliu Afusat issued a statement on Sunday as Commissioner of Police Naziru Bello Kankarofi condemned the incident and restated the command's zero tolerance for domestic violence.
  • Following investigation completion, police said the suspect will be charged to court. Authorities urged the public to resolve domestic disagreements through lawful means and avoid actions risking lives.
