NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, JUL 13 – Yuji Watanabe, manager of a neighboring store, was arrested as an accomplice in the planned theft of rare Pokémon cards valued at $170,000, police confirmed.
- Early Tuesday morning in New Bedford, a masked intruder forcibly entered 1st Edition Collectibles and stole rare Pokémon cards valued at over $113,000.
- The theft occurred after the burglar shattered a back door and cut a gate lock, and co-owner Filipe Andre said the robbery was premeditated.
- The store, which had closed all last week, published serial numbers of each graded stolen card and asked the community to watch for the items via a flyer and social media.
- Andre said, "We'd just like our stuff back" and called on the thief to return the cards 'no questions asked' while noting thieves knew exactly what they targeted.
- The store reopened July 15 with no arrests made so far, and police continue to seek help identifying the suspect captured on CCTV carrying a backpack of stolen cards.
