Poilievre says all Conservatives will campaign for Alberta to stay part of Canada
Poilievre said Conservatives will campaign for Canadian unity if Alberta voters face a separation referendum this fall, as separatists gather support.
On Thursday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced he will campaign across Alberta to keep the province in Canada if a separation referendum occurs this fall, declaring himself a "strong Canadian federalist."
Separatist elements in Alberta gathered enough signatures for an independence petition, though an Alberta court ruled it invalid last week as Smith's government neglected its constitutional duty to consult First Nations.
Poilievre vowed that all Conservative MPs will campaign for Canadian unity, arguing "Alberta deserves a fair deal in this country" by pushing resource development and urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to do the same.
Smith, who advocates for a "sovereign Alberta within a united Canada," faced controversy after her government issued a press release claiming a committee voted for a referendum before the vote actually occurred.
Poilievre stated he will similarly oppose separation if the Parti Québécois forms a government in Quebec, while Carney signed an agreement with Smith last week adjusting climate policies and backing an oil pipeline to the Pacific Coast.
