Egypt's Prime Minister Visits Tanzania to Attend Inauguration of Julius Nyerere Dam
The 2,115-megawatt project is already feeding the national grid and is expected to support industry, irrigation and regional power trade, officials said.
- On Saturday, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan inaugurated the 2,115-megawatt Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project in Rufiji District, with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly attending on behalf of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
- An Egyptian consortium of Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric completed the facility between June 2019 and March 2025, with Tanzania financing the project independently at a cost of about US$2.8 billion.
- The plant already supplies about 44.9% of electricity fed into the national grid, utilizing the efforts of approximately 12,000 employees, including 1,700 Egyptian engineers and technicians.
- During the ceremony, Madbouly stated the project refutes claims that Egypt opposes development in Nile Basin countries, while asserting Cairo will safeguard its rights regarding the river.
- Economist Zitto Kabwe noted Tanzania could generate more than $1 billion from regional electricity trade, though Tanzania National Business Council Executive Secretary Dr Godwill Wanga emphasized the country must double transmission capacity to fully utilize the power.
