Plans unveiled for new publicly owned Welsh energy company
The plan would bring existing energy bodies together and keep more renewable energy profits in Welsh communities, officials said.
The Welsh Government launched a public consultation today on proposals to consolidate existing energy organizations into a single national company, with responses open until November 30, 2026.
Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy Adam Price emphasized Wales's "huge potential" for clean energy and argued the strategy would retain economic benefits locally, unlike the Industrial Revolution when coal resources primarily benefited external interests.
The proposed entity would not "replace existing energy suppliers or directly set household electricity prices," but would develop renewable assets, support community ownership, and invest in smart energy systems to potentially reduce costs long-term.
Plans include establishing a Welsh Energy Wealth Fund to "support the most vulnerable in Wales as well as those living in areas where projects are being delivered." The government invites public responses online.
Former Scottish energy secretary Gillian Martin previously told officials such firms were "not something we are able to do at the moment with the current devolution settlement," yet critics argue constitutional barriers are merely an "excuse" for lacking political ambition.
