Planet Labs to Indefinitely Withhold Middle East War Imagery
The company will release images only case by case for mission-critical or public-interest needs after earlier delays failed to ease security concerns.
- On Saturday, California-based Planet Labs announced it will indefinitely withhold satellite imagery of Iran and the surrounding conflict zone, complying with a request from the administration of United States President Donald Trump.
- The move expands upon a 96-hour delay initially imposed in March, which Planet later extended to 14 days to prevent adversaries from using commercial data for weapons guidance or target identification.
- Effective retroactively from March 9, the firm will restrict access to all new imagery within the designated area, switching to a "managed distribution" model releasing visuals only on a case-by-case basis for mission-critical requirements.
- This directive limits transparency for researchers and media organizations, while Vantor, formerly Maxar Technologies, continues applying its own "enhanced access controls" in regions where United States forces are actively operating.
- Planet expects the policy to remain in effect until the conflict ends, which escalated after United States and Israeli forces launched strikes against Iran on February 28, prompting retaliatory missile barrages across the Middle East.
