Body Found in Snowy Mountains Plane Wreckage
SNOWY MOUNTAINS, NEW SOUTH WALES, JUL 17 – A multi-agency search overcame heavy snow and rugged terrain to find the plane wreckage near Khancoban after two days, officials said.
- David Stephens, a 74-year-old pilot from Bega, disappeared on July 15 during a flight from Wangaratta to Moruya after having his aircraft inspected.
- The disappearance triggered a multi-agency search beginning July 15 in rugged, snow-covered alpine terrain near Dargals Trail in the Snowy Valleys.
- On July 17 around 4pm, a rescue helicopter located the wreckage of Stephens' 1966 Beechcraft Debonair about 10 kilometers east of Khancoban.
- Police found a body near the crash site on July 18 believed to be Stephens', whom fellow club members described as a wise, experienced flyer involved in local aero clubs and rally commentary.
- NSW Police took over the investigation on July 18, with outcomes pending as Stephens' family expressed heartbreak while awaiting answers about the crash.
