Plane Owned by Scripps Research CEO Goes Missing over the Pacific Ocean
NEW SOUTH WALES, JUL 16 – The search involves multiple agencies using helicopters and jets in difficult snowy terrain with temperatures as low as 4C, as the pilot remains missing after the plane vanished.
- A single-engine Cessna registered to Scripps Research CEO Peter Schultz went missing Sunday after departing Ramona Airport near San Diego, piloted by 67-year-old Tsotne Javakhishvili.
- The pilot was cleared to land at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport but stopped responding to air traffic control and the plane disappeared from radar after flying approximately 500 miles southwest over the ocean.
- Search teams, including the U.S. Coast Guard, searched a 2,600-square-mile area for over 24 hours using helicopters, jets, and vessels before the aerial search was suspended due to limited visibility.
- Javakhishvili was a respected synthetic biology researcher, originally from Georgia, who collaborated with Schultz and contributed to genetic code expansion and immunotherapeutics, and Schultz called him a skilled pilot and dear friend.
- The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an inquiry regarding the suspected crash, while Schultz announced the creation of a postdoctoral fellowship to commemorate Javakhishvili's contributions to science.
