Pittsburgh steel industry celebrates its role in building America
The project will create thousands of temporary construction jobs and keep about 3,000 steelworkers on the payroll, officials said.
On Monday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and U.S. Steel CEO David Burritt announced Nippon Steel increased its investment in the Mon Valley Works from $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion.
Historian Ron Baraff noted the industry became complacent after World War II, allowing competitors to push ahead; Pittsburgh lost 150,000 steel jobs over 100 years, necessitating modernization.
Construction begins this year, decommissioning the hot strip mill at U.S. Steel's Irvin Works in West Mifflin and building a new facility at the Edgar Thompson Works in Braddock.
Steelworker Keli Vereb stated, "these jobs are more than just jobs here. It's the survival of the communities that we live in," while the project maintains 3,000 steelworkers.
The investment aims to restore the spirit of innovation Andrew Carnegie championed; Carnegie believed investing in capital produced "better steel" and ensured long-term success.
