Pilots, Flight Attendants at Higher Risk for Radiation-Related Cancer Deaths

On Monday, August 17, 2026, a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that pilots and flight attendants have the highest and second-highest rates of radiation-related cancer deaths among 503 occupations studied.
Commercial jets cruise at altitudes above 30,000 feet, where the atmosphere offers less shielding from cosmic radiation; aircrew absorb 3 to 6 millisieverts annually, far exceeding the 0.4 millisieverts average travelers receive.
Researchers identified that 6.9% of flight attendant deaths and 6.7% of pilot deaths were radiation-related, surpassing nuclear technologists ranked 12th; no association appeared for non-radiation cancers.
Lead author Vishal Patel of Harvard Medical School notes the United States lacks mandatory dose monitoring or limits for aircrew, unlike European regulations, and advocates for individual dose estimation.
Patel suggests clinicians should track occupational history in patient charts, though the finding does not warrant lower screening ages or additional imaging for routine flyers.
