Polish Olympic Chief Arrested as Prosecutors Probe Suspected Crypto-Linked Bribe
Authorities say Radoslaw Piesiewicz took bribes for a sponsorship deal that promised Olympic medallists cryptocurrency prizes and exposed investors to a $94 million loss.
- On Thursday, police arrested Polish Olympic Committee president Radoslaw Piesiewicz on suspicion of accepting bribes from a crypto trader for sponsorship deals. Sports Minister Jakub Rudnicki confirmed the arrest, stating Piesiewicz "discredited Polish Olympics."
- Authorities allege the crypto fund Zondacrypto was "in reality a Ponzi scheme," causing $94 million in losses for around 30,000 victims. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski described Piesiewicz as a "symbol of the extreme corruption plaguing the Olympic movement."
- Media reports said Piesiewicz received a watch worth 40,000 euros from Zondacrypto chief Przemyslaw Kral. The committee signed a deal offering crypto bonuses to medallists at the Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina.
- Prime Minister Donald Tusk told parliament that Zondacrypto's founder had "disappeared" and was "very probably" dead. Former justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro fled to the United States, while deputy Marcin Romanowski remains in Moldova.
- Investigations continue into Zondacrypto's links to "Russian mafia" money and the broadcaster Republika. Kral is cooperating with prosecutors seeking a lighter sentence as President Karol Nawrocki faces scrutiny for blocking crypto market regulations.
