- On September 21, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology mandated Bureau of Indian Standards certification for smartphone screen protectors, effective April 1, 2027, under the IS 19348:2025 quality standard.
- Screen protectors currently range from around ₹20-30 to several hundred rupees with highly variable quality, prompting the government to add them as the 66th item under compulsory registration to eliminate sub-standard products.
- The IS 19348:2025 standard, titled Glass Screen Protector Specification, covers glass quality, clarity, and packaging requirements, aiming to give consumers greater confidence in product consistency and restrict sales of non-compliant goods.
- ICEA chairman Pankaj Mohindroo projected the mandatory certification will catalyze a Rs 12,000-16,000 crore quality-driven industry and generate around 60,000 jobs while contributing Rs 2,000 crore in GST revenues.
- Using technology from US material technology firm Corning, Optiemus Infracom executive chairman Ashok Gupta announced 2 crore units of additional capacity with January 2027 shipment targets, though price impacts remain uncertain until compliance begins.
