Philippines to summon former national police chief in probe into Duterte-era killings
Interior Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla Jr. said the probe covers 100 plus alleged killings and starts with a subpoena for the former police chief.
Interior Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla announced Sunday that Senator Ronald dela Rosa will be summoned on Monday for investigation into alleged extrajudicial killings ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte.
Arrested in March 2025, Duterte currently faces trial at the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands for alleged crimes against humanity committed during his tenure as mayor of Davao.
Remulla identified Dela Rosa as the "tip of the spear," noting that all airports and seaports have been alerted to prevent his exit as the investigation begins.
Dela Rosa has not appeared at the Senate since November 2025 amid reports of imminent arrest, though Remulla emphasized the domestic probe remains separate from the ICC investigation.
A 2024 congressional investigation recommended criminal charges against key police officials involved in the crackdowns, following years of alarm from Western governments and the United States.
