Philippine court orders senator’s arrest for large-scale corruption; he surrenders and posts bail
Estrada surrendered and posted bail on the graft charge as prosecutors said a separate non-bailable plunder warrant is expected soon.
- On Friday, the Sandiganbayan ordered the arrest of Senator Jinggoy Estrada over graft and plunder charges tied to flood control project anomalies. Estrada surrendered and posted ₱90,000 bail for the graft case, though the court imposed a travel ban.
- Prosecutors allege the cases stem from an "intricate mechanism involving illegal budgetary insertions and project allocations" within the Department of Public Works and Highways. The Office of the Ombudsman filed charges on May 28, claiming Estrada received more than 573 million pesos in illicit payouts.
- Former Public Works chief Manuel Bonoan also faces an arrest warrant for the same anomalies. Former engineer Brice Hernandez alleged Estrada facilitated ₱355 million for Bulacan's 1st district in exchange for a 30-percent commission.
- Top anti-graft prosecutor Jesus Crispin Remulla said a second arrest warrant for the non-bailable plunder charge is expected soon. Estrada, son of former President Joseph Estrada, has denied the allegations as "outright lies."
- Estrada emphasized respect for judicial institutions, stating he intends to "avail myself of every lawful means to defend myself and clear my name." The senator has faced previous corruption charges, providing context to the current legal battle.
