Former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib’s home attacked after Hasina media event
Police said unidentified people tried to set fire to Shakib Al Hasan’s Magura home after his virtual appearance at Sheikh Hasina’s press conference.
Unidentified assailants attacked the ancestral home of Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan in Magura with a petrol bomb on Wednesday, hours after he joined a virtual press conference hosted by deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
During the New Delhi press conference, Hasina announced her intention to return to Bangladesh in December, stating, "Whatever fate awaits me, I will return to my people."
Magura Sadar Police Station officer Md Abdullah Al Mamun reported that miscreants vandalized windows and attempted to ignite the house; Shakib faces multiple legal cases, including being among 147 individuals named in an FIR regarding an alleged murder.
The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed outrage on Wednesday, noting it conveyed concerns to the Government of India regarding the event's ramifications; The Awami League condemned the violence as a "calculated attack."
Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh since the Hasina government's fall, citing safety concerns; security remains tightened around his property following the attack despite his prior expressed desire to appear in the legal process.
