‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Returns to Rock Roots with West End Revival
Sam Ryder makes his West End debut as the rock opera returns for a limited summer run with rotating King Herod performers.
On Tuesday, the rock musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" returned to London's West End for a limited summer run at the London Palladium, featuring Eurovision 2022 runner-up Sam Ryder making his theatre debut as Jesus.
Created by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, the rock opera first debuted as an album in 1970 before transferring to the West End in 1972, where it ran for eight years.
Director Tim Sheader's production features a cast of around 30 and a 19-piece orchestra; Lloyd Webber noted the performance is "much, much more like a very highly staged rock concert."
Numerous celebrities attended Tuesday's opening night, including Richard Armitage, Brian Conley, and Rosie Jones, as Ryder earned a standing ovation for his powerful solo performance of "Gethsemane."
The current engagement runs until September 5 before moving to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in October, with a nationwide tour scheduled for next year.
