Peter Burling and Team NZ to square off in Italy
Burling joins Luna Rossa as one of two helmsmen while eight boats line up for the preliminary regatta, including two Team New Zealand entries.
This weekend, three-times America's Cup winner Peter Burling races against his former team at the Preliminary Regatta in Sardinia, marking a significant competitive return.
Burling joined the Italian outfit Luna Rossa last June after leaving Team New Zealand in April 2025, following a contract dispute between the sailor and his former team.
Eight boats will compete in Sardinia, including two each from Team New Zealand, Luna Rossa, and Great Britain, with Alinghi and Roche Posay each entering one boat.
Nathan Outteridge will skipper the senior Team New Zealand boat against Burling, saying "Pete and I have had a great relationship" despite their current rivalry.
The 38th America's Cup will take place in Napoli in July 2027, while late challengers Team Australia and America Racing will not participate in this Preliminary Regatta.
