Pete Ricketts wins Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Nebraska
Ricketts will face independent Dan Osborn in a Senate race that nonpartisan handicappers rate likely Republican, with the GOP holding a 53-47 majority.
On Tuesday, Republican Senator Pete Ricketts secured Nebraska's GOP Senate nomination with 78.3 percent of the vote, advancing to face independent challenger Dan Osborn in November's general election.
Ricketts was appointed to the Senate in 2023 to replace Ben Sasse after serving two terms as Nebraska governor, positioning him to seek a full six-year term as Republicans work to maintain their 53–47 Senate majority.
Independent challenger Osborn, a Navy veteran and industrial mechanic, outraised Ricketts in the first quarter with roughly $1.2 million, while May polling showed Osborn leading 47 percent to 42 percent in a head-to-head matchup.
Democratic candidate Cindy Burbank won her primary but signaled she would drop out to endorse Osborn, while accusations emerged that fellow Democratic candidate Bill Forbes acts as a Republican "plant" to split opposition votes.
Ricketts campaign spokesperson Will Coup dismissed the "plant" allegations as a "conspiracy theory," while analysts note Nebraska's Republican lean favors Ricketts despite tight polling if Democratic candidates remain on the November ballot.
