Pet Owners Warned as Popular Dog Food Brand Recalled After Reports of Eye Issues
Years said it will collect unused meals, apply credits and pause subscriptions for six weeks while it investigates the suspected ingredient link.
On Monday night, Years, a premium dog food subscription service, issued a recall after identifying a "potential link" between its buckwheat ingredient and 57 reported cases of dry eye in dogs.
The company launched an investigation on August 1 after receiving multiple reports of dogs experiencing sudden dry eye in both eyes, with symptoms including redness, cloudiness, and thick discharge.
David Felton, a PR consultant, estimated spending around £1,500 on treatment after his dog, Cookie, suffered "a lot of pain" and "getting really gunky" eyes; Years urged its 40,000 customers to contact their vet "promptly."
Years paused all subscriptions for an initial period of six weeks to reformulate meals using quinoa instead of buckwheat, apologizing for the "worry and disruption" caused.
While acknowledging that "one case is one too many," Years plans to fund an independent study with veterinary experts to address the "profound suffering" experienced by affected pets.
