Peru's congress votes to oust President Jeri
José Jerí was removed after 75 of 102 lawmakers voted to censure him amid investigations into undisclosed meetings with Chinese businessmen and corruption allegations.
- On Wednesday , Peruvian lawmakers picked Jose Maria Balcazar as interim President in a televised congressional vote that ended a power vacuum of more than 24 hours.
- On Tuesday, prosecutors opened an investigation into whether Jeri 'exercised undue influence' in government appointments, amid claims of improper hiring of nine women and a secret meeting with a Chinese businessman.
- Jose Maria Balcazar, an 83-year-old lawyer and former judge, had been elected head of Congress before becoming interim President amid Peru's eight leaders since 2016 and ten years of political turnover.
- Mr. Balcazar will serve until July 28, leading Peru after the April 12 election and pledging in parliament to ensure a peaceful, transparent democratic transition.
- Amid persistent violence and extortion, the change comes amid corruption, poverty and gang growth, with Peruvian citizens saying `Presidents don't last because of corruption` and `We live in uncertainty`.

Peruvian lawmakers picked Jose Maria Balcazar as the country's new interim president on Wednesday, after previous leader Jose Jeri was impeached on graft allegations.
He will rule Peru until 26 July, date of the ceremony held by the winner of the presidential elections scheduled for 12 April
