Pentagon prepares major military reorganization plan: Report
The plan aims to reduce combatant commands from 11 to eight and cut four-star generals reporting to the defense secretary to speed military decision-making, officials said.
- People familiar with the matter say Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth plans to place CENTCOM, EUCOM and AFRICOM under U.S. International Command and combine NORTHCOM and SOUTHCOM into U.S. Americas Command.
- The review grew from a request Hegseth made in the spring to improve troop command, and officials say the plan aims to speed decisions, prevent 'decay', and align with the Trump administration's national security strategy shifting focus toward the Western Hemisphere.
- Taken together, the proposals would shrink combatant commands from 11 to eight and cut four‑star admirals and generals reporting directly to Hegseth, with some concepts considering six commands and about two dozen alternatives reviewed.
- Members of Congress have required the Pentagon to provide a detailed blueprint, and this year's National Defense Authorization Act would bar funds for at least 60 days after lawmakers receive it.
- Hegseth has already moved to reshape personnel by forcing out nearly two dozen senior officials, while critics including Chuck Hagel, former Defense Secretary, warn consolidation risks regional expertise and a September 2 attack prompts a congressional investigation.
