Pentagon labels tech giant Alibaba and electric car maker BYD as aiding Chinese military
The updated blacklist now covers 188 companies and warns U.S. firms of tighter contracting and investment risks.
- On Monday, the Pentagon added Alibaba, Baidu, and EV-maker BYD to the 1260H list, which identifies Chinese companies believed to support the People's Liberation Army.
- Created by the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, the 1260H list requires the Pentagon to identify firms with direct or indirect ties to the Chinese military.
- The list has grown to 188 entities, up from roughly 130 last year, and the Department of Defense will restrict American companies from doing business with listed entities starting June 30, 2026.
- Accusing the U.S. of "overstretching the concept of national security," the Chinese Embassy on Monday defended Chinese companies, while Tencent and CATL have previously disputed their designations.
- President Trump is reportedly weighing whether the United States should take equity stakes in domestic AI companies, as Unitree, a robotics firm filing for a $7 billion IPO, was also added to the list.
