Pennsylvania infrastructure investment will fund 79 projects statewide
The plan will accelerate 79 projects, pave more than 400 miles of roads and deploy the first $250 million immediately, officials said.
- On Thursday, Governor Josh Shapiro announced a $775 million investment from Pennsylvania's Motor License Fund to accelerate road and bridge repairs across all 67 counties over the next 18 months.
- Senate Republican Majority Leader Joe Pittman said his caucus identified $3.3 billion in the Motor License Fund that PennDOT "could not explain why the money wasn't being used" for road projects, prompting the legislative push.
- The first $250 million will fund 79 "Rapid Deployment Projects" covering more than 400 miles of roadway across 44 counties, with construction already underway on Route 378 in Lehigh County ahead of schedule.
- PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll stated expediting projects reduces maintenance costs and prevents road deterioration, allowing crews to focus on other activities and creating a "cascading, positive effect for the entire region."
- Since taking office in 2023, Shapiro has directed more than $11 billion into state infrastructure, including repairs to more than 2,000 bridges, with this funding round ensuring accelerated work continues through November 2027.
