Penn State University Fraternity Suspended Following Hazing Investigation
Penn State suspended the fraternity after credible reports of physical and mental abuse led to assault and conspiracy charges under Pennsylvania's Anti-Hazing Law.
- Yesterday, Penn State University officials announced the suspension of the Lambda Lambda chapter of Phi Beta Sigma for four years, effective Aug. 4.
- Following credible reports of hazing, Penn State's Office of Student Accountability and Conflict Response initiated an investigation that found the chapter violated conduct and hazing policies.
- Abuse reports detail pledges were hit on the buttocks with a 24-inch paddle and punched in the chest 10 times, with fraternity leaders overseeing and participating.
- In May, Ferguson Township police charged Jacob D. Francis and Jayson Archer with assault and hazing, and the university said one student is under conduct review while a second is no longer enrolled.
- Under the Timothy J. Piazza Anti-Hazing Law, if the chapter seeks re-recognition after suspension, it must undergo two years of conduct probation.
