Green Light for Greenlight: Pembina, Partners Go Ahead with Gas Plant for Data Centre
The 932-megawatt gas-fired plant will supply dedicated power under a long-term tolling deal, with about 85% of costs secured by fixed-price agreements.
On Thursday, Pembina Pipeline Corporation, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners , and Kineticor Asset Management announced a positive final investment decision for the C$4.6 billion Greenlight Electricity Centre , a 932-megawatt facility in Sturgeon County to power an unnamed data centre.
Alberta is attracting significant data centre investment due to its massive natural gas reserves, positioning itself as a hub for the growing Artificial Intelligence and cloud computing industry requiring reliable, long-term power supply.
Construction will utilize high-efficiency Siemens Energy gas and steam turbines, with approximately 85 percent of project costs de-risked through fixed-price agreements with Aecon Group Inc. and Técnicas Reunidas for engineering and procurement.
Greenlight secured a long-term Electrical Energy Supply Agreement with the data centre customer, ensuring stable capacity payments while the facility will require approximately 150 million cubic feet of natural gas daily.
The Sturgeon County site permits expansion to 1,864 megawatts, aligning with Alberta's 'bring your own power' data centre strategy and the Alberta Electric System Operator's Phase 2 Large Load Allocation process to strengthen regional competitiveness.
