BC Wildfire Service Continues to Work on Containing the Bald Range Wildfire Near Summerland
Officials downgraded orders for Peachland and Electoral Area West as the Bald Range wildfire stayed out of control at nearly 20,000 hectares.
- On Friday, Central Okanagan Emergency Management downgraded evacuation orders for Peachland, Electoral Area West, and Trout Creek properties east of Highway 97 to alerts, allowing residents to return home nearly one week after fleeing the Bald Range Wildfire.
- Despite the order downgrade, the out-of-control Bald Range Wildfire remains mapped at 19,891 hectares. BC Wildfire Service continues to battle the blaze with around 300 firefighters, 15 helicopters, and 60 pieces of heavy equipment.
- Incident commander Hugh Murdoch reported "really good success" knocking down the fire perimeter closest to the community. Overnight, crews conducted hand ignitions near Shingle Creek Road "where weather conditions allow" to further secure the area.
- Returning residents should inspect properties for damage, as no structural loss has been reported. Interior HealthWildfire advises downloading the Returning Home Guide for safe cleanup of smoke, ash, and debris.
- Residents remaining on alert must be prepared to leave immediately if wildfire conditions change, COEM stated. Smoldering ground fire and smoke will remain visible within the perimeter over the coming weeks.
