'Turning Point' in Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls
The UK strategy aims to halve violence against women and girls within 10 years and mandates specialist police units in every force by 2029, amid funding and scope concerns.
- Today, 18 months in to their time in power, the Home Office published the Freedom From Violence and Abuse strategy, counting 5.1 million victims in the year ending March 2025 and requiring specialist units in every police force by 2029.
- In July 2024, police chiefs declared VAWG a national emergency, prompting the government to vow to halve it in ten years amid a 264% rise in police-recorded sexual offences noted earlier this year.
- Among promised measures, ministers included �5m to train health workers, �20m for teachers, �500m housing support , and operational measures like a �2m specialist police unit and new online abuse teams.
- Mr Campion said the delay is unacceptable and called for immediate action, adding `Whilst I welcome the Government acting, and its vow to halve VAWG in ten years, they cannot afford to waste a single day`.
- Charities point out that children are not represented in survey figures and are therefore especially vulnerable, as under-16s are excluded from the Crime Survey for England and Wales, which the Police Foundation called `a glaring omission`.
