Pavin Smith's 1st Homer of the Season Lifts the Diamondbacks over the Angels 4-3
Smith’s first homer in nearly a year and Nelson’s seven innings helped Arizona improve to 4-3.
On Monday night in Phoenix, Pavin Smith hit a tiebreaking solo homer and Ryne Nelson threw seven quality innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Los Angeles Angels 4-3.
The Los Angeles Angels grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on Jo Adell's double, but Arizona rallied with RBI singles from Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel Jr., plus Geraldo Perdomo's RBI double in the seventh.
Nelson allowed two runs over seven innings while striking out five, and Mike Trout hit his 16th home run for Los Angeles in the fifth to briefly tie the game at 2-2.
Paul Sewald earned his 18th save in 19 chances by striking out Oswald Peraza in the ninth, though Donovan Walton hit a solo homer off him earlier in the inning.
The Diamondbacks send RHP Merrill Kelly on Tuesday to face LHP Reid Detmers as the teams continue their series.
