Paul Skenes has fallen back to earth in 2026. The Pirates ace is intent on staying the course
Skenes allowed three runs and four walks in 4.1 innings, but the Pirates rallied on two ninth-inning homers.
Paul Skenes pitched 4 1/3 innings in a 4-3 Pirates victory over Detroit on Wednesday, showing velocity improvements after hovering at 95 mph in a loss to Miami last week.
Following his Rookie and Young award seasons, Skenes faces a challenging campaign as his ERA has risen to 3.95, more than double his career-opening mark of 1.96 when the season began.
Skenes allowed three runs on four hits while throwing just 46 of his 81 pitches for strikes, needing 24 pitches to complete the first inning after Colt Keith and Gleyber Torres drew walks.
Rafael Flores and Brandon Lowe homered in the ninth inning, securing the win after Skenes faced a potential 10th loss in 13 decisions since May 17.
Despite recent results, Skenes remains in the top 10 in MLB strikeouts and stated, "I've been learning a lot and I'll continue to learn a lot," as he navigates his 24th year.
