Passing rates for oral exams peak at noon, dip in morning and afternoon, study finds

UNIVERSITY OF MESSINA, ITALY, JUL 24 – A study of 104,552 oral exams found passing rates peak at noon, suggesting time-of-day effects influence student performance during assessments, researchers said.

  • A new analysis shows the researchers at the University of Messina found that passing rates peak around noon, contrasting with lower rates in morning and late afternoon.
  • Using records from October 2018 to February 2020, the study drew on 104,552 oral exam results provided by the University of Messina.
  • At 8 am, pass rates were 54%, lower than midday, with success rising to 72% at 12 pm, then dropping to 51% at 4 pm.
  • Vicario recommended, `for institutions, delaying morning sessions or clustering key assessments in the late morning may improve outcomes,` to enhance fairness and success rates, according to Vicario.
  • The researchers hope future work will improve assessment fairness, with Prof Carmelo Mario Vicario noting the potential to extend findings to job interviews and other evaluations.
