Fourteen political groups asked the National Elections Jury (JNE) to clarify whether an ex-mayor who is running for the post of first governor can receive the mayor's credential in the 2026 elections.
Carlos Vilela, National Director of Education of the JNE, reported that the 26 candidates for the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima will be divided into two groups of 13 to participate in the debates on September 21 and 22. The meeting will have four blocks and each candidate will have 10 and a half minutes to present and contrast their proposals.
Rafael López Aliaga and his participation in the debate for the Mayor of Lima generate controversy between the parties. Fourteen groups asked the JNE for a statement about his participation and the possibility of a mayor elected in 2022 receiving a credential again. Renovation Popular opposed the request.
