Part of Ottawa’s Rideau Canal skateway set to open on Dec. 31
Colder weather allowed a 3.4-kilometre section of the Rideau Canal to open early, marking the 56th season with up to 22,000 daily visitors expected, NCC said.
- On Dec. 31 the NCC opened a 3.4-kilometre Rideau Canal skateway section from Somerset West to Bank Street Bridge at 8 a.m., weather permitting.
- Colder-than-Usual weather enabled the early December start, with recent readings in the minus double digits, and the canal has opened in December only five other times since 2000, the NCC said.
- This marks the 56th season for the Rideau Canal, recognized as the world's largest rink, with dozens of skaters including Prime Minister Mark Carney, his spokesperson Audrey Champoux said.
- The early opening provided economic support to vendors who rely on tourism dollars, and local families like Mr. Segala and family benefited with visitors able to skate during winter vacations.
- Forecasts show uncertainty about the 7.8-kilometre full skateway, as Environment Canada models give a 52-per-cent chance of above-normal temperatures and the NCC hopes most will open next week.
