Vancouver Island Residents Lose More than $220K to Scammers
Oceanside RCMP said victims lost money through phone impersonation and an unregistered investment firm, including one report of a $140,000 loss.
- Parksville Qualicum Beach residents reported losing $140,000 to an online investment firm on Aug. 19 and $77,000 in cryptocurrency theft on Aug. 21, totaling more than $220,000 in scam losses.
- During the week of Aug. 17 to Aug. 23, The Oceanside RCMP received 329 complaints, reflecting a variety of recent scams continuing to affect the region.
- Multiple property crimes occurred in Parksville, including a business break-and-enter in the 1600 block of Stroulger Road on Aug. 21, and a Trek mountain bike reported stolen in the 1000 block of Lee Road.
- An unregistered dirt bike was stolen in the 3500 block of Island Highway West in Qualicum Beach; also Aug. 23, a vehicle was reported stolen in the 1200 block of Ruffles Road in Parksville.
- The Oceanside RCMP detachment at 421 Pym Street North offers presentations on fraud prevention to community groups; residents should phone 911 if they see a crime in progress.
