Parksville council eyes lower speed limits for city roads
A proposed $100,000 plan would lower speeds on several roads and neighbourhood streets, while council adds the issue to a future work plan.
Parksville Council decided to defer speed limit reduction decisions to the next council, adding the project to the 2027 to 2031 work plan instead of taking immediate action.
Mayor Doug noted changes aim at "correcting dangerous roads and making them safer for our community," while PDBA student ambassadors found the Highway "horrible to walk on and the tourists avoided it at all costs."
Engineering manager Ayla Defoor estimated the proposed changes would cost approximately $100,000, requiring a 0.5 per cent increase to property taxes, with potential additional costs for an external traffic engineer.
Mary Beil argued current speeds pose risks to e-bike users, but Adam Fras opposed immediate action, stating he does not "think right now is the time to be putting it on the work plan."
Following the deferral, Council included project costs in the 2027 budget and five-year financial plan, leaving decisions on routes like Despard Avenue and Corfield Street for the next council.
