Man Arrested, Charged with Threatening to Kill a Minnesota State Senator
John D. Tobias faces two felony counts after threatening violence over $1.4 million COVID-19 losses; authorities recovered nine firearms from his property, officials said.
- On Tuesday, a Minnesota State Patrol investigator at the State Capitol alerted Hubbard County, leading to John David Tobias's arrest after threats tagging Sen. Glenn Gruenhagen and the Capitol.
- Claiming pandemic losses, Tobias told authorities he lost $1.4 million and threatened to 'execute' people at the Capitol if unpaid, over Gov. Tim Walz's shutdowns.
- Searches on Tuesday recovered nine firearms, 45 boxes of ammunition, and a recorded call to the Attorney General's Office, with Tobias admitting to making the call.
- On Wednesday, Feb. 25, Tobias was arraigned on two felony counts of making terroristic threats; bail was set at $300,000 or $150,000 with conditions, and the next court date is March 2.
- Investigators say Tobias had been contacted previously and denied intent to kill, while Jeremy Geiger noted threats to lawmakers doubled between 2024 and 2025.
