Notre-Dame Gets Back St Thomas Statue Adorning Spire Base

  • A statue of Saint Thomas was returned to Notre-Dame in Paris, marking the recovery of all 16 statues that adorned the spire before the 2019 fire.
  • The statue, weighing 100 kilograms and standing three metres tall, was unharmed as it was removed for restoration shortly before the fire.
  • The statues represent 12 apostles and four evangelists, designed by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc and sculpted by Adolphe-Victor Geoffroy-Dechaume in 1857.
  • The cause of the 2019 fire remains unknown, though an investigation suggested it may have been due to an accident like an electrical fault.
