Immigration arrest outside Oregon preschool rattles parents
BEAVERTON, OREGON, JUL 19 – ICE agents broke a car window to arrest Mahdi Khanbabazadeh for overstaying his student visa, marking one of the first school property arrests in Oregon amid increased enforcement.
- At Guidepost Montessori School in Beaverton, ICE agents took a father into custody during morning drop-off, detaining him as he dropped off his child.
- Enforcement stepped up after the Trump administration removed barriers to sensitive-location arrests, with ICE claiming Khanbabazadeh overstayed a visa issued in 2017.
- An unnamed witness said agents wore face coverings during the operation, Randy Kornfield reported, and ICE officers broke a window to complete the arrest, while the witness noted agents in vests surrounded the parking lot.
- Parent Tyler Burns described the arrest as `super aggressive`, and Angel Ignacio said the school was `deeply disturbed` by Tuesday’s events.
- The incident marks the first ICE detention on school grounds in Oregon, Senator Ron Wyden said the family sought his help, and his spokesperson added they are pressing the administration for answers.
