Emergency Service Workers Graduate with Paramedic Degrees
CUMBRIA, JUL 18 – The apprenticeship program supports frontline paramedics balancing work and study, with nearly 150 currently enrolled to meet rising ambulance service demand, officials said.
- On Thursday, 17 July 2025, University of Cumbria conferred paramedic science degrees on over 60 students.
- Offered as a fully funded work-based route, the apprenticeship programme, delivered by SWASFT and the University of Cumbria, allows frontline clinicians to earn a degree while working.
- Programme growth is evident with over 140 qualified SCAS staff, with nearly 150 undergraduates currently enrolled in the apprenticeship programme.
- At the recognition event, 27 graduates gathered with their families, friends and colleagues, with Neil Lentern, director of paramedic practice at SWASFT, praising their commitment.
- With demand on ambulance services rising, the apprenticeship scheme is crucial for building a robust paramedic pipeline and aligns with workforce diversity goals, as South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust states.
