Lucas Paquetá became Flamengo's most expensive signing at $49.4 million after rejecting offers from Chelsea and Tottenham to return to his boyhood club.
- Lucas Paquetá completed the move to Flamengo on Thursday for 35.8 million , making him the most expensive player ever signed by a Brazilian club, reported on Jan 31, 2026.
- Paquetá had made clear he wanted to return to Brazil this month and told Flamengo his heart was set on the club, having requested a return ahead of the World Cup.
- Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea called but Paquetá ignored interest, telling Tata, his agent, `Okay, but what about Flamengo?` and later, `I said: 'Yeah, I don't want to know about that. I want to hear about Flamengo,' and that's how it all turned out.`
- West Ham reluctantly allowed their No10 to discuss terms and have a medical, while manager Nuno Espírito Santo said earlier this month he had hoped to keep Paquetá but could not convince him.
- Paquetá joined West Ham United in 2022 for 51million and now departs for 36.5m, having played 139 times with 23 goals and 15 assists, and was cleared after an FA investigation.
