Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk flies with the Thunderbirds in an F-16 ahead of Fort Lauderdale show
Tkachuk endured more than 9 Gs and briefly took the controls during a practice flight with Lt. Tyler Keener.
On Friday, Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk flew in an Air Force Thunderbirds F-16 Fighting Falcon ahead of this weekend's Fort Lauderdale Air Show, riding in the back seat during a practice flight with Lt. Tyler Wrath Keener.
Florida Panthers owner Vincent Viola, a West Point graduate, ensures the team pays tribute to veterans at every home game, establishing the military ties that made Tkachuk's participation a natural fit for the organization.
During the flight, Tkachuk withstood more than 9 G's of force and briefly took the controls, while the Thunderbirds later presented him with a photo of the team flying past Mount Rushmore and a commemorative pin.
Tkachuk expressed deep patriotism, stating "It's the best country in the world" and crediting the freedom to enjoy America to those working behind the scenes in service roles.
Later this month, Tkachuk will compete at the world championships aiming to become the first American in hockey's Triple Gold Club, following his Stanley Cup and Olympic gold achievements.
