Palestinian students stranded in third country seeing visas processed after long wait
Most of the 37 students have received final decisions, but officials have not said how many were approved or denied.
On Tuesday, a spokesperson for Immigration Minister Lena Diab announced expedited visa processing for 37 Gazan students and their families stranded in a third country.
The shift follows a two-year advocacy campaign by Canadian academics; on May 28, NDP MP Jenny Kwan questioned Diab during a House of Commons committee meeting about special exemptions for Palestinian students.
Laura Blondeau, Diab's director of communications, confirmed most of the 37 students have received final decisions, though the department did not disclose approvals or denials, emphasizing "top priority" on safety.
Remaining visa interviews are scheduled for this week, while advocates note that roughly 130 Palestinian students accepted at Canadian universities remain stranded abroad, many in the Gaza Strip.
Officials maintain all applicants must complete necessary security and admissibility checks, while students remaining in Gaza continue facing significant obstacles regarding travel and regional safety.
