He used those “seeing stones” to coordinate his armies and sow despair in the universe of J. R. Tolkien. Peter Thiel and Alex Karp, two of Silicon Valley’s most controversial characters, were inspired by The Lord of the Rings to choose the name of their company, Palantir.
